Regulation of Toy Safety

ANEC-BEUC Press Release: “Groundbreaking Commission proposal to ban hormone-disrupting chemicals in toys must become law.”

The European Commission has put up a ground-breaking proposal to outlaw chemicals in toys that alter hormones. Such a prohibition would be enacted internationally for the first time ever.

Chemicals that disrupt hormones have been related to serious health issues like obesity, early puberty, and infertility. According to a recent study, 11 out of 20 teething toys tested emitted hormone-disrupting substances that were either recognised or suspected to do so.

Chemicals that could cause cancer, disrupt DNA, or impair reproductive health are already prohibited by the Toy Safety Directive. Hormone-disrupting substances, however, are not currently included by the ban.

The proposal from the European Commission would close this gap and safeguard kids from coming into contact with these dangerous substances.

The suggestion is a component of a larger EU toy safety law change. The idea must now be examined and approved by the European Parliament and EU member states.

Consumer groups, who have long lobbied for a ban on hormone-disrupting chemicals in toys, have applauded the plan. They contend that the idea represents a significant
improvement in safeguarding the health of kids.

The proposal also calls for a variety of additional safety improvements for toys, such as mandating a digital toy passport. This would make it easier for authorities to track
products along the supply chain and enforce the law.

The plan represents an advancement in safeguarding the health of kids. The plan needs to be approved by the European Parliament and EU Member States in order
for it to be effectively implemented.
