India Scales Up Adoption of Advanced Technology for Marine Conservation

India is deploying cutting-edge technologies, including satellite imagery and autonomous underwater vehicles, to enhance its marine conservation initiatives, according to a statement made by the Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Monitoring Ocean Health
The government is utilizing satellite data and remote sensing tools to monitor sea surface temperature, salinity, and water quality, aiding in the detection of illegal fishing activities and the assessment of coral reef health to protect marine biodiversity.

Artificial Reefs and Coral Restoration Efforts
As part of a broader strategy to boost marine ecosystems and promote sustainable fishing, India is deploying artificial reefs.

  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, 937 artificial reef units have been approved across 11 coastal states and Union Territories, backed by an investment of ₹176.81 crore (approx. $21.3 million).

  • The Zoological Survey of India has also led significant coral restoration initiatives, including the country’s largest coral translocation project.

Combating Marine Plastic Pollution
India is taking active steps to address marine plastic pollution through its participation in the International Maritime Organization’s GloLitter Partnership programme, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

  • A national task force has been established, and an action plan is in place to minimize plastic waste from shipping and fisheries sectors.

Promoting Sustainable Fisheries and Climate Resilience
The Fishery Survey of India is studying how ocean temperature changes affect fish stocks and marine biodiversity. The organization also guides fishers on sustainable and climate-resilient fishing practices, alongside awareness campaigns to encourage environmentally responsible fishing methods.
