In addition to limiting printing on bottle surfaces and requiring the use of at least 15% recycled or bio-based polymers, Japan is proposing to outlaw colored PET bottles.
To reduce the use of plastic, PET bottle weight limits have been tightened.
In an effort to improve environmental sustainability, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) published the Design Standards for PET Beverage Bottles (Draft) on March 18, 2025. Increasing recyclability, decreasing plastic usage, and encouraging the use of sustainable materials are the main goals of these modifications.
Key Design Standards:
- PET bottles components
To improve the recyclability of PET bottles, the draft sets detailed design requirements for body, label and cap of PET bottles.
- PET bottles weight limit
The draft introduces strict weight limits for PET bottles (excludes label and cap) based on their type and capacity, ensuring reduced plastic consumption.
- PET bottles Sustainable Materials
Each PET bottle must contain at least 15% eco-friendly materials, which include:
- Recycled plastics that adhere to JIS Q 14021, or Japan Industrial Standards
- Bio-based polymers made from organic, sustainable resources (not include fossil fuels).
