On October 7, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that sodium perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS-Na, CAS RN 82382-12-5) has been officially added to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) under the automatic listing mechanism of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (NDAA). The listing will take effect on January 1, 2026, bringing the total number of PFAS chemicals subject to TRI reporting to 206.

Background PFHxS-Na is a widely used surfactant in applications such as firefighting foam, metal plating, and semiconductor cleaning. It is persistent, bioaccumulative, and potentially hepatotoxic. In 2025, the EPA published the IRIS Toxicological Review: Perfluorohexanesulfonic Acid (PFHxS, CAS RN 335-46-4) and Related Salts, establishing, for the first time, toxicity values for PFHxS-Na. While the TRI previously included PFHxS and related salts, PFHxS-Na had not been covered until now.

Effective January 1, 2026, applicable businesses must track the use and handling of PFHxS-Na under Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) and submit their first annual report by July 1, 2027.
