About
Cradle to cradle suggests that industry must protect and enrich ecosystems and nature’s biological metabolism while also maintaining a safe, productive technical metabolism for the high-quality use and circulation of organic and technical nutrients.
What is the Cradle to Cradle Life Cycle?
Cradle to cradle can be defined as the design and production of products of all types in such a way that at the end of their life, they can be truly recycled considering nature’s cycle with everything either recycled or returned to the earth, directly or indirectly through food, as a completely safe, nontoxic, and biodegradable nutrient.
With cradle to cradle, all the components of a product feed another product, the earth or animal, or become fuel: products are composed of either materials that biodegrade and become food for biological cycles or of technical materials that stay in closed-loop technical cycles, continually circulating as valuable nutrients for industry.
Everything is a resource for something else. In nature, the “waste” of one system becomes food for another. Everything can be designed to be disassembled and safely returned to the soil as biological nutrients, or re-utilized as high quality materials for new products as technical nutrients without contamination.
The cradle to cradle promotes raw materials that are not wasted, but retained within the biological or technological cycle. Waste is a nutrient, either for the biosphere, or for the technosphere. It is therefore important to reuse these raw materials, either as fully compostable biological material, or as high-end technological resources. Every product is part of a perpetual cycle, in which it is reused and preserves or increases its value.
The products will be designed according to the cradle to cradle philosophy and do not contain any harmful substances. The raw materials used in the production process meet the same requirements as the raw materials that were originally extracted.
What are the benefits to a business of using cradle to cradle manufacturing?
Cradle-to-cradle does not let old products go to waste. Instead, a product’s materials and components are repurposed or recycled. This keeps materials “in the economic loop” and saves energy during production.
- Less impacts from reused & recycled components/materials.
-
Reduced impacts over extended product lifetime
Circular Economy powered by Cradle to Cradle
The concept of the circular economy, which results in environmentally-friendly shaping of economic systems, is based on the Cradle to Cradle principles.
Circular economy approaches can take effect in the various stages of a product’s lifecycle: Material selection and design should enable longevity, recycling and reparability or biodegradability.
Main aim is to establish the Cradle to Cradle design principles for the circular economy in all industry sectors, including textile, packaging, automotive, buildings, consumables and cosmetics.
