ISO and UNDP Introduce New Standard to Integrate SDGs into Corporate Strategy

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched ISO/UNDP 53001 – Management Systems for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Requirements.

The new standard provides organizations with a structured framework to embed the UN SDGs into their strategy, governance, and day-to-day operations.

It enables organizations to:

  • Identify and assess their positive and negative impacts on the SDGs.
  • Engage relevant stakeholders and interested parties.
  • Set meaningful SDG objectives and targets.
  • Collect data and monitor progress.
  • Identify risks, interdependencies, synergies, and trade-offs.
  • Make informed decisions that maximize positive impacts while minimizing unintended adverse impacts.

With the 17 SDGs forming part of the UN’s 2030 Agenda, ISO/UNDP 53001 offers organizations a more systematic approach to aligning business decisions and management systems with sustainable development priorities.
