China Will Update Guidelines for Packaging Groups and Dangerous Goods Nomenclature

China has formally started an upgrading project for the national standard system and is actively adjusting to the changing trends of international regulations.

The Standardization Administration of China (SAC) declared on March 11, 2025, that it would begin revision projects for 28 national standards, including:

GB/T 15098-2008 The classification principle for dangerous goods’ transportation packaging groupings

This standard outlines how different packaging categories are to be categorized for the transportation of different kinds of hazardous materials. It serves as the foundation for identifying packaging groups and is applicable to the performance testing and inspection of dangerous goods packaging by the production, storage, transportation, and inspection authorities.

GB/T 7694-2008 The rule of nomenclature for dangerous goods

The choice and naming of shipping names for hazardous materials are outlined in this standard. It pertains to the naming of hazardous materials that are moved and kept by river, railroad, highway, and civil aircraft.

New rules regarding the transportation of lithium batteries have been added to the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations (Rev. 23), also known as the UN Model Regulations. China has formally started an upgrading project for the national standard system in response to the rapidly growing new energy sector and the ongoing growth of cross-border trade. China is aggressively harmonizing with the changing trends of international regulations.

In order to improve the scientific rigor and uniformity of managing the transportation of dangerous products, the project to update GB/T 15098-2008 and GB/T 7694-2008 will take these regulatory modifications into account this time.
