India Introduces Amendment Rules for Battery Waste Management in 2025

The Battery Waste Management Amendment Rules 2025, which were recently released by India’s Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), further optimize the compliance procedures under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. In order to lower compliance costs for businesses and improve the efficacy of environmental regulation, this amendment focuses on three primary areas: the use of digital tags, the easing of hazardous material regulations, and data management improvements.

Key Highlights of the Amendment:

Digital Labeling Option Introduced

Producers can now print barcodes or QR codes containing the EPR registration number on:

  • Batteries or battery packs

  • Equipment containing batteries

  • Battery packaging or accompanying product brochures

This digital substitute ensures traceability throughout the product lifetime while lowering the expenses associated with managing and printing physical labels.

Relaxation in Hazardous Substance Marking

Batteries having a cadmium concentration of less than 0.002% (20 ppm) or a lead content of less than 0.004% (40 ppm) do not need to have a Cd or Pb label.

Enhanced Industry Regulation

Every quarter, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) will update its information and publish a consolidated list of producers who have chosen digital labeling.

It is anticipated that these actions will support environmental preservation and sustainable development initiatives while also assisting battery producers, importers, and recyclers in better managing their goods and waste disposal procedures. To guarantee complete compliance, pertinent companies should modify their activities in accordance with the new rules.
