ECHA recommends eight substances for REACH authorization

ECHA recommends that the European Commission add eight substances, including lead, to the REACH Authorization List in order to protect workers and the environment. Once substances are added to the list, companies will be required to submit an application for permission to continue using them.

ECHA’s 11th recommendation includes the following substances: –

•    Ethylenediamine;

•    2-(4-tertbutylbenzyl)propionaldehyde and its individual stereoisomers;

•    Lead;

•    Glutaral;

•    2-methyl-1-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2-morpholinopropan-1-one;

•    2-benzyl-2- dimethylamino-4’-morpholinobutyrophenone;

•    Diisohexyl phthalate; and

•    Orthoboric acid, sodium salt

More information about the reasons for recommending these substances for authorisation and of their uses is available in the annex and in ECHA’s recommendations.

Conclusion: –

The European Commission will determine which substances are included on the Authorisation List and under what conditions. If a substance is on the Authorisation List, it cannot be placed on the EEA market or used after a specified date unless a specific use authorization is granted.

The objective of the authorization procedure is to encourage the substitution of substances of very high concern when technically and economically viable alternatives exist. Until this is attained, the objective is to ensure adequate risk management for human health and the environment.
