The announcement means that the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) has officially added a new chemical to the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) the national list of industrial chemicals that can be manufactured or imported into Australia for commercial use.
Under Section 82 of the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019, a chemical that was previously assessed and granted a certificate for introduction must be added to the AIIC after five years, provided no new concerns or restrictions arise during that time.
· When a company wants to introduce a new chemical into Australia, AICIS first assesses it for safety and issues a certificate.
· That chemical stays off the main inventory for five years. This period allows monitoring and ensures the chemical’s safe use.
· After five years, if everything remains compliant, the chemical is formally listed on the AIIC.
Once listed, the chemical can be used or imported by any company, not just the one that originally applied, if they follow any conditions or reporting requirements set by AICIS.

Manufacturers and importers of industrial chemicals in Australia are legally required to follow all rules set under the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019 and related regulations. This means they must ensure that every step of their operations from production and importation to handling and use complies with national safety and environmental standards.
The Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) enforces these requirements to make sure that chemicals used in industry are properly assessed, tracked, and managed.
By maintaining strict controls, AICIS aims to:
· Improve the efficiency and transparency of chemical management;
· Protect human health and the environment from potential risks associated with industrial chemicals; and
· Ensure responsible introduction and use of chemicals in Australia’s marketplace.
In essence, these regulations create a balance allowing industrial innovation and trade while safeguarding people and ecosystems from chemical hazards.
