The Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation (EC 1907/2006) is the cornerstone of the European Union's chemical legislation. Enacted in 2007, its core purpose is to enhance the protection of human health and the environment from risks posed by chemicals, while also promoting the competitiveness and innovation of the EU chemical industry.
REACH places the burden of proof on companies, requiring them to identify and manage the risks associated with the chemical substances they manufacture or import into the EU in quantities of one tonne or more per year.
