ISO and the GHG Protocol have established a Joint Working Group to develop a harmonized product-level GHG accounting standard.
This follows their strategic partnership launched last year to unify global emissions measurement and reporting standards, addressing fragmentation that hinders climate action. The initiative aims to create a consistent global framework that simplifies accounting, improves policy alignment, and reduces reporting complexity for companies.
Under the partnership, both organizations are aligning existing GHG standards and co-developing new carbon accounting methodologies, including a product carbon footprint standard to support more detailed value chain emissions tracking and decarbonization decisions.
The new standard will build on existing frameworks while moving toward a unified global approach, improving transparency, supporting credible decarbonization, and enabling mechanisms such as Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAMs).
