A new positive list for food contact materials (FCMs) was recently published by Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA). In addition to adding 13 new chemicals, this edition modifies the prerequisites and consumption restrictions for four substances.
The changes will take effect on June 1, 2025. The CAA has created a transitional strategy to provide a seamless transfer to the new rules. Substances that were imported, manufactured, or sold prior to June 1, 2020, may be utilized in their original context until the transition period is over. Furthermore, in order to ensure compliance, relevant businesses must present reliable proof—such as manufacturing and import records—that the chemicals’ use conforms with earlier laws.
In addition to urging associated businesses to modify their import and production plans to comply with the new regulations, this change demonstrates Japan’s continuous efforts to ensure food safety and its strong care for public health.
