On September 1, 2025, the Australian government released the September 2025 Industrial Chemicals Categorisation Guidelines, including an updated list of chemicals considered high hazard for categorisation. The online Guide to Categorizing Chemical Importation and Manufacture has also been updated. These annual updates take effect on September 1 each year, in line with the AICIS registration cycle.

High-Hazard Chemicals Compared to the September 2024 version, 118 new chemicals have been added to the high-hazard list. The list provides CAS numbers, AIIC listings, AICIS assessments, and evaluations from:

· Australia’s Safe Work Australia Hazard Classification Information System

· U.S. National Toxicology Program Report on Carcinogens

· UNEP Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals list

· Japan’s Chemical Substance Control Law

This information helps introducers assess potential risks to human health and the environment.

Guide to Categorizing Chemical Importation and Manufacture All introducers (individuals or businesses importing or manufacturing industrial chemicals in Australia) can classify their introductions using the online Guide (Version 3.4). Chemicals are categorized as listed, exempted, reported, or assessed.

Classification Steps:

1. Step 0 – Listed: Check if the chemical is already on the high-hazard list.

2. Step 1 – Exclude exempted/reported categories: Certain introductions are not eligible for these categories.

3. Step 2 – Exempted: For chemicals posing a very low risk to human health and the environment.

4. Step 3 – Reported: For chemicals posing a low risk.

5. Step 4 – Human health risk assessment

6. Step 5 – Environmental risk assessment

7. Step 6 – Finalize category: Complete classification and fulfill associated legal obligations.
