EU Introduces New Regulations to Promote Sustainability and Innovation in the Construction Sector

The new Construction Products Regulation has officially entered into force, introducing modernized rules to replace those established in 2011. This updated Regulation aims to simplify the sale of construction products within the EU Single Market, promote innovative building techniques, and enhance the sector’s competitiveness and sustainability.

A key highlight of the new rules is the advancement of digitalization within the construction sector. The introduction of Digital Product Passports will centralize all relevant information about construction products, including performance declarations, conformity certifications, safety details, and usage instructions. These passports will also facilitate the accurate calculation of a building’s carbon footprint, supporting more sustainable practices.

The updated CPR represents a transformative shift for the construction industry. It empowers builders, architects, engineers, consumers, and public authorities to make informed decisions based on the performance and sustainability of construction products

Additionally, the new Regulation strengthens the competitiveness and efficiency of the construction sector. It encourages the adoption of innovative and sustainable techniques, such as prefabricated or modular elements, including façade systems. Expanding the use of offsite construction methods can significantly lower costs and accelerate the delivery of both new and renovated housing. These methods have the potential to reduce construction waste during production and manufacturing by 10-15%. Furthermore, prefabricated units can be disassembled and reused, maximizing their lifecycle and contributing to greater sustainability
