Switzerland Commits to 65% Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction by 2035 Under Paris Agreement

Switzerland has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, with an average reduction of 59% between 2031 and 2035. These targets align with the Climate and Innovation Act and the country’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. To support this commitment, the government will update the CO2 Act and submit a revised climate strategy to the UN by February 10.

Switzerland’s Updated Climate Commitments
The Federal Council has approved Switzerland’s new emissions reduction target under the Paris Agreement, emphasizing a strong focus on achieving these cuts primarily through domestic measures.

What’s Changing?

Switzerland’s new climate targets go beyond its previous commitments for 2021–2030, aligning with IPCC recommendations and the country’s net-zero 2050 strategy. The revised CO2 Act will outline the necessary measures to achieve these ambitious reductions.

Policy Updates & Next Steps

Switzerland is also updating its long-term climate strategy by integrating policies from the Climate and Innovation Act, the revised CO2 Act, and the Electricity Supply Act.

The country will submit its updated climate target and strategy to the UN by February 10, detailing the role of renewable and nuclear energy in achieving climate neutrality.

“Switzerland will submit its new climate target, together with the updated climate strategy, to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change by 10 February,” officials confirmed.

The Federal Council aims to align national policies with international climate commitments while ensuring sustainable energy development and emission reductions.
