On June 1, 2025, Jordan’s established standard for the labelling of chemical compounds went into effect. The DJS 990:2024 Label-Chemical Substances Label standard was approved by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) on December 30, 2024, and it became formally operative on June 1, 2025.

The new standard, which specifies precise labelling criteria for chemicals circulating in Jordan, closely combines the EU CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) and the eighth revised version of the United Nations GHS. This further encourages smooth integration with global markets and represents a new phase in Jordan’s chemical management.

Scope

All chemicals and mixes are covered by DJS 990:2024, apart from radioactive materials, veterinary medications, food or feed, cosmetics, and medical equipment.

Label Elements

As per DJS 990:2024, all labels should be prepared in English and Arabic. The label shall include the following elements:

· Country of origin

· Chemical Identifier

· Component information

· Hazard and precautionary statements

· Signal word

· Hazard class and pictograms

· Supplier name and address

· Nominal quantity

· Production date and expiration date (if applicable)

Other Key Considerations

· The name, ingredients, and hazard features of the product or mixture must all be authentic, accurate, and not deceptive to consumers. It is necessary to provide the country of production (all nations must be given if the product is manufactured in more than one).

· Pictograms, which have a white background with a red border and black graphics, must be displayed clearly and prominently, taking up at least 1/15 of the label area. • The label must be securely affixed to the container and should not readily come off or fade, even when the container is used or handled in a typical manner.

· If inner packaging and secondary packaging contain multiple containers, labels must be affixed to both the inner packaging and secondary packaging.

On June 1, 2025, Jordan’s new rules dubbed the “Middle Eastern version of the chemical passport” will go into effect. Businesses must update their labelling for compliance as soon as possible because failing to do so could result in hazards like market access prohibitions and difficulties clearing customs.
