The European Commission has released a ‘Roadmap towards Nature Credits’, aiming to unlock private financing for biodiversity restoration by establishing a credible, certified market for nature-positive actions such as wetland restoration and reforestation.
Key Objectives:
· Bridge the €65 billion/year biodiversity funding gap through a blend of public and private capital.
· €7 billion committed by 2027, doubling current external biodiversity funding.
· Launch a voluntary, standardised, and certified nature credit system to reward measurable ecological improvements.
Nature Credits:
These credits will represent verified environmental outcomes from activities that protect and restore ecosystems—offering investors both environmental and reputational value, while generating income for farmers, landowners, and communities.
Stakeholder Engagement:
· Expert Group Formation: Call for expressions of interest open, with the first deadline on 10 September 2025.
· Public Feedback: Open consultation until 30 September 2025.
· Pilot Projects underway in France, Estonia, and Peru, in collaboration with partners like the Biodiversity Credit Alliance and the World Economic Forum.
· Policy Alignment:
Nature credits align with the EU Nature Restoration Law, Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and broader strategies like the Clean Industrial Deal, Water Resilience Strategy, and the European Ocean Pact.
Why It Matters:
With 75% of eurozone businesses reliant on nature, the EU views nature credits as a transformative asset class that promotes ecological health and economic resilience. The roadmap recognizes nature as not just an environmental issue, but an economic imperative—underscored by the World Economic Forum’s estimate that over 50% of global GDP depends on nature.
