The UK has launched its first national strategy for onshore wind, aiming to double capacity to 27–29 GW by 2030, create up to 45,000 jobs, and reduce electricity costs. The plan outlines over 40 measures to revive a sector that had stalled for nearly a decade, positioning clean energy as central to the UK’s economic and energy security goals.

Published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the strategy includes:

· Faster planning approvals and updated aviation and radar regulations

· Investment in UK-based supply chains and repowering of older turbines

· Revised community benefits of up to £5,000 per megawatt annually, potentially delivering £70 million/year to rural areas

This follows the lifting of England’s de facto ban on onshore wind in 2023 and is part of the broader “Plan for Change” to cut reliance on global gas markets.

Industry Reaction: Trade groups welcomed the plan, calling it a long-overdue step to unlock investment and accelerate clean power deployment. However, workforce and planning barriers still need attention.

Offshore Progress: Alongside the strategy, a marine spatial review has been completed to support future offshore wind projects and guide The Crown Estate’s seabed usage strategy.
