On July 21, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the addition of 18 new chemicals to its Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL). With this update, the list now includes 983 chemicals used across industries such as cleaning products, industrial solvents, and more.

Aligned with the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) amendments, all new chemicals must undergo EPA safety reviews before entering the market. The newly added substances were evaluated under the Safer Choice Program, meeting stringent standards for human health risks, ecotoxicology, environmental persistence, and other safety benchmarks.

As part of the environmental focus under the Powering the Great American Comeback initiative, the update is paired with improvements to the EPA’s digital query platform. Through a three-color labeling system, businesses can easily compare chemical safety levels, while consumers can access ingredient traceability information by scanning product QR codes. The EPA aims to achieve comprehensive smart traceability for all certified products by 2026.
