The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) have announced a landmark partnership to unify global standards for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. 

Under the agreement, ISO and GHG Protocol will: 

• Harmonize existing standards, including the ISO 1406X family and the GHG Protocol’s Corporate, Scope 2, and Scope 3 Standards. 

• Co-develop new carbon accounting standards, providing companies with clearer, more consistent frameworks. 

• Develop a joint product carbon footprint (PCF) standard, addressing growing demand for granular value chain data to support decarbonization strategies. 

The initiative aims to reduce fragmentation in emissions reporting, simplify compliance for businesses, improve consistency for policymakers, and lower reporting burdens overall. 

Founded in 1947, ISO is the world’s leading developer of international standards. Established in 1997 by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), GHG Protocol has shaped key sustainability frameworks, including the IFRS Foundation’s ISSB Standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) under the CSRD regulation.
