The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on Tuesday unveiled the world’s first register of certified experts in science-based target setting, aiming to boost global climate skills amid rising demand for emissions reduction strategies
The register features professionals who completed a seven-part certification through the newly launched SBTi Academy. Candidates were evaluated on key competencies such as assessing greenhouse gas inventories, modeling emissions targets, and applying technical standards. This certification demonstrates advanced proficiency and prepares experts to guide companies through the complexities of setting credible climate targets.
Launch of the SBTi Academy
The certification is part of the SBTi Academy, an e-learning platform offering nine hours of online training. The programs are tailored for professionals at different skill levels, preparing them to support companies in their decarbonization efforts.
The academy is organized into three hubs:
· Onboarding Hub: Free introductory courses covering foundational concepts like “Introducing Science-Based Targets” and “Understanding Technical Concepts.”
· Practitioners’ Hub: Advanced training on topics such as the GHG Protocol, corporate near-term targets, and net-zero strategies.
· Certification Hub: Assessment center for specialists seeking recognition as certified experts
Addressing the Global Skills Gap
SBTi highlighted that the academy tackles a growing shortage of green talent, with demand for sustainability professionals outpacing supply. Surveys show 76% of businesses cite limited skills as their main upskilling challenge, while 68% of sustainability leaders are “homegrown” and 60% were not initially hired for sustainability roles.
“While interest in science-based targets is increasing, access to skills remains a barrier,” said Tracy Wyman, SBTi Chief Impact Officer. “The Academy provides foundational knowledge for newcomers and certification for experts, bridging the skills gap to help companies succeed in decarbonization.”
Driving Corporate Decarbonization
SBTi noted that science-based targets act as a “north star,” translating ambition into action by guiding investments, operational changes, and measurable emissions reductions. By equipping professionals to set credible targets, the academy seeks to accelerate corporate decarbonization on a global scale.
The launch marks a key evolution in SBTi’s role within the global sustainability ecosystem.
