The “Proposal on measures to prevent microplastic pollution from the unintentional release of plastic pellets” aims to reduce microplastic pollution by 30% by 2030. Risk assessment and self-declaration of conformance are required. Companies processing plastic pellets over 1,000 tonnes per year will also need accreditation. Some businesses, especially SMEs, have less criteria.
On October 16, 2023, EU issued Proposal 1 seeking feedback on ways to reduce microplastic contamination from plastic pellets being released unintentionally. Proposal 2 can be sent prior to December 19, 2023.
Purpose and Goal of the Proposal
Considering the hazard of microplastic pollution on the environment and human health, the EU is working to reduce microplastic pollution from different sources.
